THE 61st Infantry (Hunter) Battalion (61IB) of the Philippine Army, with headquarters at Miagao, Iloilo, in partnership with Cebu Couture and Otso Marino, conducted two “Balik Eskwela” outreach programs on June 7 and June 8, 2025, in Barangay Bagumbayan and Barangay 8, Tigbauan, Iloilo, providing school supplies, free haircuts, and other services to at least 125 students.
“Our presence in communities like Tigbauan reflects our dedication to nation-building. We want to be more than defenders — we aim to be partners in shaping a brighter future for our youth,” said Lieutenant Colonel Arturo Balgos Jr., commanding officer of the 61IB.
He emphasized the importance of investing in the dreams of children, as it not only protects but also uplifts communities, fostering hope, opportunity, and shared purpose in the future.
On June 7, the Philippine Army and Cebu Couture, headed by Maricar Apple Clark, collaborated with Barangay Bagumbayan officials, including Barangay Chairman Rodel Tañagras, to serve 50 elementary school students.
Activities included a feeding program, parlor games, free haircuts, and distribution of school supplies and learning materials. The outreach aimed to prepare children for the school year and build strong community ties.
On June 8, the outreach effort continued in Barangay 8, where 75 children received school supplies and another 75 availed of free haircuts. Led by the 61IB, Cebu Couture, and Otso Marino — represented by Arcen Tondo on behalf of Arnel Tondo — the activity featured fun games, a feeding program, and recreational sessions.
The successful event was supported by Barangay Chairman Elena Titular, together with barangay officials, tanods, and health workers.
Captain Emmanuel Tactay, the battalion’s civil-military operations officer (CMO), and other Army personnel joined both outreach activities, underscoring the Philippine Army’s commitment to supporting education, community development, and unity through the spirit of bayanihan.
Both events reflect the Philippine Army’s evolving approach to public service — emphasizing not only security but also active involvement in local development, child welfare, and educational access.
Cebu Couture, founded by Jehan Bassenden and co-founded by Riadh Mabrouk, is committed to supporting the Filipino community and raising awareness beyond the fashion show. They plan to collaborate with like-minded non-governmental and nonprofit organizations to maximize their impact and create positive change in the community. (Leo Solinap/SunStar Philippines)
