SOLDIERS from the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry (Hunter) Battalion based in Miagao, Iloilo and civilian volunteers conducted road clearing operations in Barangay Importante, Tibiao, Antique, on July 17, 2025, in response to the effects of Tropical Depression Crising.
The operation, led by Lieutenant Colonel Arturo Balgos Jr., commanding officer of the 61IB, was launched following an Orange Rainfall Warning from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), indicating a high risk of flooding and landslides.
Personnel from Delta Company’s Cafgu Active Auxiliary (CAA) unit were among the first responders, clearing debris to restore access to isolated areas. Barangay Captain Barmie Cristobal, kagawads, and residents assisted in the effort.
Authorities urged residents to stay alert and heed official weather bulletins as heavy rains continued to affect the region.
The CAAs are civilian volunteers under the 61IB of the Philippine Army. They serve as a support force for the military in remote barangays, particularly in Western Visayas. CAAs also actively participate in humanitarian assistance and disaster response, such as road clearing and debris removal during emergencies.
"The dedication of our CAA units under Delta Company has been exceptional,” Balgos said. “Their service, even under threat of worsening weather conditions, embodies our commitment to protecting lives and ensuring immediate community support.” (Leo Solinap/SunStar Philippines)
