A CIVILIAN was wounded, and seven suspected members of the Communist New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in a series of firefights between government troops and communist rebels on April 27, 2025, in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

The wounded civilian, identified as Marcel Camangyan Anguit, was caught in the crossfire during the early morning clashes.

He was immediately rushed to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City and is now in stable condition.

Major General Michael G. Samson, commander of the 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division of the Philippine Army, based in Jamindan, Capiz, expressed concern for the injured civilian and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

“We regret that a civilian was injured during the encounter, and we are ensuring that he receives the best possible medical care. We also extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed—regardless of their affiliations. Every life lost in armed conflict is a tragedy,” he said.

The presence of Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) or NPA remnants in communities continues to threaten peace and endanger innocent lives, underscoring the need for sustained efforts to end local communist armed conflict. Samson urged remaining members to lay down their arms and choose peace while there is still time.

The fatalities were identified as remnants of the dismantled South East and South West Fronts of the Komiteng Rehiyon–Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor (KR–NCBS).

Their remains were transported to Sola Funeral Homes in Kabankalan City for proper documentation and processing.

Two of the seven fatalities were identified as Reniel Locsin Cellon, also known as Adie or Kumpol, and Charity Amacan, also known as Nanay, Nelma, or Cara.

Their bodies have been claimed by their respective families, while the remaining five cadavers have yet to be claimed.

Authorities continue to urge remaining communist combatants to surrender and reintegrate into society, emphasizing the government’s efforts to restore peace and protect communities in the region. (Leo Solinap/SunStar Philippines)
