A FORMER female rebel, known by her alias Kenken, was honored by the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry (Hunter) Battalion during a donning ceremony at Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) – Miagao Campus in Iloilo for her inspiring transformation from insurgency to education and community service on June 5, 2025.

Lieutenant Colonel Arturo S. Balgos Jr., commanding officer of the 61IB, said Kenken’s transformation proves that “with compassion, opportunity, and support, former rebels can reclaim their future and contribute positively to our society.”

Kenken, once part of the armed struggle, surrendered to the 61IB and has since undergone reintegration through the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-Clip). The donning of the university sash symbolized her transition to a life of peace, education, and nation-building. Her story has become a symbol of hope, resilience, and transformation, inspiring others to follow the same path.

The 61IB was represented at the event by Sergeant Peter B. Silva, public affairs non-commissioned officer, and Private First Class Aniemae S. Carillo, civil affairs non-commissioned officer.

Their presence highlighted the Army’s continued commitment to helping former rebels return to mainstream society through peace-building initiatives and education.

This milestone also highlights the success of partnerships between the military, academic institutions, and peace-focused organizations in achieving inclusive nation-building.

The Philippine Army reaffirmed its support for individuals who renounce violence and instead pursue education and positive social change. (Leo Solinap/SunStar Philippines)
