THE Iloilo City Police Office (Icpo) has pledged full support for the City Government's urgent initiatives to combat the increasing incidents of street fighting involving minors across the city on August 4, 2025.
The commitment was expressed during an emergency meeting called by Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas Monday morning, August 4, at the City Mayor’s Office.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) focal person for minors Teresita Gelogo, district heads, representatives from the Public Safety and Order Management Office (Posmo), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and members of the Iloilo City Council -- Councilors Atty. Sedfrey Cabaluna and Nene Dela Llana.
Also present were the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) chief, chiefs of police from ICPS 1 to 10, Icpo QUAD staff, and the Public Information Office.
Legada stressed the need for stronger cooperation among families, schools, and local agencies to address the disturbing trend.
“I strongly urge all parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s behavior and whereabouts. Discipline begins at home. We must not allow our youth to jeopardize their future due to poor choices or negative peer influence,” Legada said.
He also appealed to school officials to strengthen their presence during dismissal times and help guide student behavior beyond school premises.
The Icpo warned that minors found involved in offenses, such as physical injury, illegal assembly, or property damage, may be held legally accountable.
These offenses, once documented, can negatively impact a minor’s educational opportunities and employment prospects.
“We are committed to support the City Government’s preventive and responsive measures. Protecting the youth and maintaining public order in Iloilo City is a shared responsibility,” Legada added.
Legada concluded by reaffirming the police department's dedication to collaborative approaches that engage families, schools, and community organizations in comprehensive youth protection efforts.
The police director emphasized that sustainable solutions require ongoing partnership between law enforcement agencies and civilian stakeholders invested in promoting positive youth development and community safety.
The Icpo maintains that addressing youth street fighting demands sustained commitment from all community sectors, with particular emphasis on enhanced parental supervision and educational institution involvement in student guidance beyond traditional school hours. (Leo Solinap)
