Iloilo mayor assures support for Baldoza tragedy victims, proposes vehicular accident protocols

ILOILO City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the road accident in Barangay Baldoza, Lapaz District, Iloilo City recently.

In a personal visit to the bereaved family, Treñas extended his sympathies and assured them of the City Government's support.

"I also met the families of those who died because of the accident (in Baldoza), and I personally condoled with them and assured them of the support of the City Government to help them with their hospital expenses, burial expense, etc. The City will also support the education of the younger sibling of one of the deceased," Treñas said.

Acknowledging the gravity of the incident, Treñas has taken measures to address road safety concerns.

In a meeting Wednesday afternoon, July 14, 2023, Treñas, along with Donna Magno, chief of City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO); Jeck Conlu, head of the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO); and Lawyer Fydah Marie Sabando of the City Mayor’s Office finalized the protocols for handling vehicular accidents.

The discussion included consultations with Lawyer Jerry Candido of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), as well as a review of the executive order issued by former President Duterte pertaining to this matter.

"We also discussed the matter on the protocols for bystanders and how they should be handled. An ordinance is going to be proposed," Treñas said.

The proposed ordinance aims to establish comprehensive guidelines for handling vehicular accidents, ensuring the safety and welfare of motorists and bystanders alike.

These protocols will play a crucial role in preventing similar incidents and effectively managing emergency situations.

The tragedy in Baldoza has prompted the local government to reevaluate existing safety measures and implement necessary changes to protect the lives of its citizens.

Treñas, together with various stakeholders, remains determined to make the necessary amendments to existing regulations in order to prevent similar accidents in the future. (SunStar Philippines)
