ILOILO City Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed full support for the "P20 Bigas Mo, Meron Na!" program following a meeting with Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Executive Director Dennis R. Arpia on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, discussing program's implementation in the city.
“We recognize the importance of making affordable rice accessible to our constituents,” Treñas said. “As part of our commitment, we will thoroughly review the proposed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and explore all possible avenues to secure funding.”
The program aims to provide rice at P20 per kilo, aligning with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s food security goals. Treñas stated the city government is committed to partnering with the national government and key agencies to ensure the program's success and make affordable rice available to every Ilonggo family.
The mayor added that the city will closely coordinate with the DA and other stakeholders to refine the agreement and identify resources needed to sustain the program.
Iloilo City is among the local government units in Western Visayas expressing interest in the initiative. This program could provide substantial relief to residents affected by rising food costs.
In recent months, the local government has increased support for food sustainability programs, including urban gardening and local rice distribution drives.
Treñas said these efforts are part of a larger strategy to reduce hunger and improve the quality of life for residents.
The MOA outlines the responsibilities of the DA and the city government in sourcing, distributing, and monitoring the low-cost rice supply.
The program is expected to target vulnerable households. (Leo Solinap/SunStar Philippines)
