RAISA Treñas-Chu formally assumed office as the new mayor of Iloilo City, unveiling her administration’s vision of transforming the city into a leading economic hub in the Philippines, on Friday, June 27, 2025.
“I am greatly humbled by this opportunity you have given me — with the highest vote ever given as mayor of Iloilo City — 170,162 votes, as the first elected woman mayor of Iloilo City,” Treñas-Chu said in her inaugural message at the Penthouse of Iloilo City Hall. “The title may be historically flattering, but it comes with great responsibility.”
Treñas-Chu emphasized a leadership style anchored on listening, innovation, and collaboration. She pledged to continue the legacy of her father, outgoing Mayor Jerry Treñas, while introducing new programs aimed at improving public health, education, and social services.
“I honorably and fully embrace the responsibility to serve, care, and love you — my fellow Ilonggos,” she said.
The new mayor paid tribute to her father’s 40 years of public service, describing him as “someone who helped into bringing Iloilo City to the next level and brought us to where we are today — Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas.”
She recalled assisting him during his term as congressman and expressed deep gratitude that he was able to witness her oath-taking.
“Pa, I will carry on our dreams and plans for Iloilo,” she said.
Among the key infrastructure projects under Treñas-Chu’s administration are the Iloilo City Hospital, Iloilo City Sports Center, redevelopment of plazas and public markets, and the Uswag Molecular Laboratory.
She highlighted the need to complete and strengthen existing programs for the benefit of future generations.
“These projects already have a framework. They are ready for implementation and reinforcement — for the sake of our children,” she said.
Treñas-Chu also outlined flagship programs such as the tRAIbaho Livelihood Program, Raise Mental Health Program, Iloilo Sports Academy, Raise A Farm, Merkado Lokal, and the Uswag Negosyo Academy. These, she said, are vital in supporting families and promoting inclusive economic growth.
She said her vision is for Iloilo City to remain competitive with other key cities in providing jobs and livelihood opportunities.
"With your help, we will see every Ilonggo rise to success,” she said.
She also called on every Ilonggo to take part in the city’s progress. “We will build on a stronger foundation of good governance, but we will also push boundaries, explore new ideas, and elevate the way we serve," she said.
Also on Friday, the 11 winning councilors from Team Uswag took their oath before barangay captains and department heads at Iloilo City Hall. Eight of them are reelectionists: Sedfrey Cabaluna, Miguel Treñas, Rex Marcus Sarabia, Alan Zaldivar, Johnny Young, Romel Duron, Rudolph Ganzon, and Frances Grace Parcon. They were joined by returning councilors Lyndon Acap and Mandrie Malabor, and first-time councilor Jose Maria "Nene" Dela Llana.
The oath-taking was officiated by Executive Judge Rose Edith Togonon of the Regional Trial Court.
Treñas-Chu concluded her speech with a commitment to deliver responsive governance: “Just like in the past, expect a leadership that listens, reflects, and innovates. With laser focus, we will roll up our sleeves, get to work, and move with every Ilonggo toward our vision.” (Leo Solinap)
