PRIVATE Rey Justin Dagsan of the 61st Infantry (Hunter) Battalion (61IB) of the Philippine Army was awarded a Letter of Commendation for saving a young boy from electrocution in Barangay Lublub, Valderrama, Antique.

The commendation was presented in a ceremony on July 2, 2025, at the Tacas Patrol Base in Barangay Tacas in Valderrama, Antique.

Lieutenant Colonel Arturo Balgos Jr., commanding officer of the 61IB based in Miagao, Iloilo, praised Dagsan's bravery, saying, “Private Dagsan’s act of bravery reflects the true spirit of a Filipino soldier—always ready to serve, protect, and risk life for the welfare of others. His courage in the face of danger is commendable and serves as an inspiration to all members of the 61st Infantry ‘Hunter’ Battalion."

Balgos emphasized that heroism is not limited to battlefields but also in everyday situations, and praised Dagsan for his exemplary service to the people, highlighting his pride in his actions.

The award was handed to Dagsan by First Lieutenant Keynes Gil Roy C. Grande, commanding officer of Charlie Company, along with Master Sergeant Arniel F. Llanera, the battalion’s sergeant major, and Staff Sergeant Virgilio S. Deriada, personnel NCO of the unit.

According to reports, Dagsan immediately responded upon witnessing a child in danger of being electrocuted. His quick thinking and decisive action saved the boy's life, demonstrating the Army’s core values of courage, service, and duty. His action has drawn praise not just from his superiors but also from the community, highlighting how soldiers remain committed to serving the people—even outside the battlefield.

The 61IB is part of the 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division of the Philippine Army. It is based in Miagao, Iloilo, and is one of three main Army units operating in Panay Island. The other two are the 12th Infantry (Lick 'Em) Battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel Vicel Jan Garsuta based in Calinog, Iloilo, and the 82nd Infantry (Bantay Laya) Battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel Jovert Pimentel based in Janiuay, Iloilo.

This recognition reinforces the military’s vital role in community service and public safety, even during peacetime. It shows how Filipino soldiers, such as Dagsan, uphold their duty not only through armed service but also through compassion and quick response in emergencies. (Leo Solinap/SunStar Philippines)
