
ILOILO City Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed deep sorrow Monday, April 21, 2025, following the passing of Pope Francis and paid tribute to the pontiff’s lifelong dedication to humility, compassion, and service to the poor and marginalized.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Pope Francis on this Easter Monday. He was a true servant of God who inspired the world with his humility, compassion, and love for the poor and forgotten,” Treñas said in a statement.
The mayor praised the Pope’s efforts in making the Catholic Church more inclusive and grounded in service, noting that his teachings brought the Church closer to the people.
“He reminded us to live simply, love greatly, and serve others with kindness. He taught us the value of an inclusive Church, a Church for all,” Treñas added.
On behalf of the people of Iloilo City, Treñas extended condolences to the global Catholic community.
“His legacy of mercy and hope will forever live in our hearts. Rest in peace, Holy Father. Thank you for your life of love and service,” he said. (Leo Solinap)
