

TWO Philippine Navy personnel drowned off Barangay Mindupok in Maitum, Sarangani Province, on Monday, August 4, 2025.
According to a report, the victims, aged 48 and 50, were conducting recreational site diving when they went missing. They were later found lifeless in open waters.
They were declared dead at a hospital by an attending physician.
In a statement Thursday, August 7, 2025, the Philippine Navy said a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and assure them of our full support during this difficult time,” the Philippine Navy said.
“We are providing full assistance to the bereaved families as part of our commitment to their welfare. Above all, we recognize and honor the service and dedication of our fallen sailors to the country and the Filipino people,” it added.
The Philippine Navy said the victims were on official leave and a wellness break at the time of the incident.
It added that a review of protocols for both recreational and operational diving activities is ongoing to prevent similar incidents in the future.(TPM/SunStar Philippines)
