THE Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday, August 16, 2025, reported a spike in dengue cases following the series of typhoons and monsoon rains that hit the country in July.

Data released by the DOH showed that 15,091 dengue cases were recorded nationwide from July 13 to July 26.

"Dengue cases are seven percent higher compared to the recorded cases from June 29 to July 12, which reached 14,131," the DOH said.

In July, torrential rains and massive flooding caused by typhoons “Crising,” “Dante,” and “Emong,” as well as the southwest monsoon, devastated several regions.

Dengue is a viral infection spread to humans through mosquito bites.

With the weather having improved in recent weeks, the health department urged the public to take advantage of dry periods to clean areas where water can accumulate.

These include gutters, clogged drains, and sewers, which are breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

"Clean, drain, dry, and cover water containers that are also home to the said mosquito," the DOH added. (Anton Banal/SunStar Philippines)
