AMID the onset of the rainy season, the Department of Health (DOH) Friday, June 20, 2025, reported an uptick in dengue cases across the country.

In a statement, the DOH said a total of 6,720 dengue cases were recorded between May 11 and 24, marking a six percent increase from the 6,192 cases reported between April 27 and May 10.

“There is an observed increase in dengue cases in the past weeks but [they] are considered as manageable,” the DOH said.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said the rise in mosquito-borne infections is expected during this time of year.

“We usually see an increase in dengue cases when it is the rainy season,” said Herbosa, following the launch of the “Alas Kwatro Kontra Mosquito” campaign at Antipolo National High School in Antipolo City.

On June 2, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) officially declared the start of the rainy season.

Given the ongoing threat of dengue, the DOH urged communities and schools to actively participate in daily cleanup efforts at 4 p.m.

These efforts include the taob (flip), taktak (shake/spill), tuyo (dry), and takip (cover) practices to eliminate all potential mosquito breeding sites.

“We must continue what we have started in our dengue prevention efforts. We must do these in our homes, up to barangays, and in schools,” said Herbosa. (Anton Banal/SunStar Philippines)
