WHILE doxycycline is widely known as a treatment for leptospirosis, the Department of Health (DOH) is reminding the public that it should not be taken at will.
In a radio interview, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa emphasized the need to consult a doctor before taking doxycycline.
"A medical assessment is done to determine if you are at low, moderate, or high risk of the disease," said Herbosa.
"There is a correct dose and duration for taking the medicine depending on your condition," he added.
The health chief warned that taking doxycycline without medical consultation increases the risk of developing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
"When antibiotics are taken incorrectly, the body may develop antimicrobial resistance, and the medicine will no longer work," said Herbosa.
The reminder came in the wake of torrential rains and massive flooding caused by Typhoons "Crising," "Dante," and "Emong," as well as the southwest monsoon that devastated several parts of the country.
