Government earmarks additional P1.28B for drivers

THE National Government has allocated an additional P1.28 billion financial support for transport workers affected by the oil price surge due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In a video message, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the distribution of the additional cash assistance will start on April 6, 2026.

The President did not provide any information on how the distribution would be.

However, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said they are awaiting the P1 billion Special Allotment Release Order from the Department of Budget and Management to fund the agency’s service contracting program, which aims to provide steady income to public utility vehicle drivers through fare subsidy, as well as provide free rides for commuters.

Marcos also outlined measures undertaken by the government, including a 50-percent fare discount for LRT-2 and MRT-3, benefiting more than 12 million additional passengers.

He said in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao, free rides are being offered to passengers.

The President said a temporary toll discount is being extended to jeepney, bus, and freight food transport in major expressways, particularly in Luzon.

Marcos also announced that starting April 15, ports will collect P1 Roro terminal fee for vehicles carrying agricultural products. (TPM/SunStar Philippines)
