AFTER seeing a surge in leptospirosis cases in early August 2025, the Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday, August 16, 2025, said there has been a slow down in cases of the flood-borne disease during the past week.
In a statement, the DOH said the number of leptospirosis cases reported per day has gone down to only 10 during the period of August 10 to August 14.
"It is down compared to almost 200 cases per day during the week of August 3 to August 9, 2025," said the DOH.
Despite this, the Department said 49 DOH Hospitals remain on alert as their leptospirosis fast lanes have been activated nationwide.
"Immediately consult the said fast lanes or your health center or hospital if you have been submerged in floodwaters or exposed to mud this rainy season so that your risk level can be assessed for proper treatment," said the DOH.
Leptospirosis is a disease caused by bacteria that is spread through the urine of infected animals that gets mixed in flood water.
Since the start of the rainy season in early June, a total of 3,752 cases of leptospirosis have been reported, as of August 14. (Anton Banal/SunStar Philippines)
