THE New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City was placed under red alert status following a commotion inside the maximum security compound on Tuesday evening, July 25, 2023, that resulted in the death of a person deprived of liberty (PDL) and injury of nine others.
Under red alert status, visitation is suspended.
The Bureau of Corrections (Bucor) said that a PDL went on a shooting spree in Quadrant 3 of the south area of the maximum security compound where nine other inmates were injured.
Another PDL took out an ice pick and stabbed another, resulting in the victim’s death.
The Bucor said the incident took place following an altercation between two members of the Bahala Na Gang and Batang City Jail. The altercation was immediately settled.
The agency is yet to identify the gang affiliation of the shooter and the inmate who stabbed another PDL, as well as the incident’s connection to the altercation.
Bucor’s Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) team and other personnel conducted a clearing operation inside the maximum security compound and they seized one caliber .45 pistol with two magazines and 12 rounds of ammunition.
The officer of the day, the keeper, and the officer-in-charge in the maximum security compound were relieved from their positions while investigation is ongoing. (SunStar Philippines)
