Coronavirus cases surge past 150,000 mark

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Friday, August 14, 2020, reported 6,216 new cases of coronavirus infection, the third highest in a single day in August, which brought the total case count surging past the 150,000 mark.

In its 4 p.m. case bulletin, the DOH reported the total count at 153,660, of which 79,813 were active, referring to patients who are still in the hospitals or in quarantine. Eighty-two cases were removed from the total.

Among the active cases, the proportion of patients in critical condition further increased to one percent (10 of every 1,000) from 0.9 percent (nine of every 1,000) on Aug. 13, the DOH bulletin showed.

Critical cases have been increasing, as these comprised only 0.7 percent of the active cases on August 12 and 0.6 percent from Aug. 8 to Aug. 11.

Mild cases, on the other hand, decreased to 91.1 percent of the active cases on Aug. 14 compared to 91.2 percent on Aug. 13, 91.3 percent on Aug. 12 and 91.6 percent on Aug. 11.

NCR cases

More than half of the additional cases on Aug. 14, or 3,848, were from the National Capital Region (NCR). This was also one of the highest in 24 hours in the capital region.

Majority of these new cases in NCR were recent. Based on the date of onset of illness, 3,044 occurred between Aug. 1 and Aug. 14 while 695 occurred in July, 53 in June, 22 in May and 17 each in April and March.

The provinces with the highest number of new cases on Aug. 14 were Laguna with 302, Rizal with 242, Cavite with 240 and Bulacan with 178.

The DOH also reported an additional 1,038 recoveries, increasing the total recoveries to 71,405. Five cases were removed from the tally.

Sixteen additional mortalities raised the death toll to 2,442.

Of the 16, seven occurred in August, five in July, three in June and one in May.

Nine mortalities came from NCR, four from Central Visayas, and one each from Bicol, Zamboanga Peninsula and Calabarzon.

The highest single-day tally for August was 6,958 on Aug. 10, followed by 6,352 on Aug. 4.

Central Visayas cases

In Central Visayas, the DOH 7 reported more recoveries than new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, Aug. 13.

The DOH 7 reported 162 additional recoveries on Aug. 13, bringing the total number of recoveries in Central Visayas to 12,357.

The regional health agency said there were 106 new cases, increasing the region’s total active Covid-19 cases to 4,244.

Lapu-Lapu City’s 53 recovered Covid-19 patients was the most number of recoveries reported by the DOH 7 on Aug. 13.

A total of 22 new cases were recorded in Cebu City; 23, Mandaue City; 13, Lapu Lapu City; 41, Cebu Province; three each in Talisay City and Minglanilla; and one case in Negros Oriental.

The DOH 7 said seven patients succumbed to Covid-19 from June 30 to Aug. 12, bringing the death toll from 1,014 to 1,021. Of the additional recorded deaths, two were logged in Cebu City; one in Mandaue City; one in Danao City; one in Consolacion, Cebu; and two in Negros Oriental.

Of the 4,244 active cases, 1,236 were confined in health facilities while 3,008 were isolated in quarantine facilities.

A total of 1,701 active cases were recorded in Cebu City; 880, Mandaue City; 679, Lapu-Lapu City; 703, Cebu Province; 72, Talisay City; 63, Minglanilla; 76, Consolacion; 21, Negros Oriental; 46, Bohol; and three, Siquijor.

There were no new cases recorded for returning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). All of the 295 tests conducted yielded negative results. From June 22 to Aug. 13, a total of 13,591 tests were conducted for the returning OFWs. (MVI/WBS)
