Covid-19 deaths in PNP rise to 87

A POLICE senior sergeant assigned in northern Metro Manila died from coronavirus disease 2091 (Covid-19) on August 7, bringing the death toll in the Philippine National Police (PNP) to 87 since the start of the pandemic.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday, August 9, 2021, that the latest mortality, 43, died of severe pneumonia caused by Covid-19 on August 7, two days after his confinement at the A. Ynares, Sr. Quarantine Facility in Montalban, Rizal. He was unvaccinated.

PNP Chief Guillermo Eleazar said the wife related the police officer lost his sense of taste and smell, and developed mild cough and colds on August 3.

He underwent a rapid antigen test and was advised to undergo RT-PCR test at the hospital. Both tests were positive.

Eleazar expressed deep sympathy with the family, and assured financial assistance and a prompt release of the death benefits due him.

He discouraged PNP personnel against self-meditation, which the deceased police officer did before going to the hospital, and to immediately seek professional medical attention upon the onset of symptoms of Covid-19.

As of August 9, there were a total of 1,673 active Covid-19 cases in the PNP.

Since last year, a total of 31,497 cops have contracted the disease and 29,737 have recovered.

Meanwhile, 63,553 or 28.24 percent of the PNP personnel are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19 while 57,466 personnel or 25.94 percent have received the first dose.

There remained 101,488 PNP personnel, or 45.82 percent, who were still unvaccinated. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)
