OVER 800 informal sector workers are set to be deployed by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to help in two projects of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

In a statement, DOLE said it will provide emergency employment to 830 self-employed individuals and/or unpaid family workers by engaging them in work in the flood control measure and school maintenance programs of the MMDA.

"This is a milestone convergence for DOLE and MMDA, especially now that we are preparing for the opening of classes and bracing for the rainy season," said Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma.

"This project will not only benefit the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers Program (Tupad) workers and their families but the public as well," he added.

Under the partnership, informal worker-beneficiaries will be deployed to help in ornamental planting, canal and esteros cleaning and clearing, open waterways deepening, drainage mains desilting, drainage laterals declogging, manhole cover installation and fabrication, steel gratings installation, as well as in classroom repairs and maintenance works.

It will be the MMDA that will provide the list of beneficiaries, relevant job descriptions, a consolidated budget proposal, and other necessary information.

The DOLE will provide the beneficiaries with Tupad shirts, safety gear, and cleaning materials, as well as work and safety orientation.

Tupad is a community-based package of assistance that provides emergency employment for displaced, underemployed, and seasonal workers, for a period of 10 to 30 days, depending on the nature of work to be performed. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
