THE entry of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace is inevitable.

This was declared by no less than the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) saying both employers and employees must learn to accept that AI will eventually impact the labor force.

“Today, artificial intelligence is already being used to run machines; craft speeches; compose music; and even create beautiful and authentic-looking landscape blueprints. But there are still some things that it cannot do," said DOLE Central Visayas Director Lilia Estillore in a statement.

"Automation and artificial intelligence are already here. With us. We have no choice but to adopt it, not to dictate nor replace manpower, but to be a tool for humans to be productive," she added.

DOLE said AI is defined as a computer program that does tasks better and faster that humans do, might render many skills redundant and obsolete.

Because of the inevitability of AI, the DOLE official said it is imperative for the workplaces to begin introducing AI, particularly in the career guidance program.

"High school and college students should be guided on the types of jobs or professions that are vulnerable to automation and AI. By doing it, we are helping them arrive at informed career decisions," said Estillore.

As for current members of the workforce, she said workers must develop life or soft skills, which cannot be automated, such as problem-solving; empathy; and creativity, to name a few.

"When things are done from the heart, it is very difficult for the AI to duplicate it. It is something that AI cannot do,” said Estillore.
