Emilio Aquino named SEC chair

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has tapped Emilio Aquino as the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), based on an appointment paper released by MalacaƱang on Thursday, June 7.

Aquino on Wednesday, June 6, succeeded Teresita Herbosa, whose seven-year term already expires since she was appointed in May 2011.

Aquino, a SEC commissioner prior to his new appointment, will serve as head of the corporate regulator for a period of seven years.

Based on Aquino's profile posted on SEC's official website, he was first appointed by Duterte as the corporate regulator's commissioner on December 2, 2016.

The new SEC chief earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce, major in accounting, magna cum laude and valedictorian at the Universidad de Zamboanga in 1984.

He also finished his law studies at San Beda College and placed 16th in the 1992 Bar Examinations.

Aquino also earned a Master's degree in Public Management at the Development Academy of the Philippines, graduating at the top of his class.

He also flew to Australia to take a short course in effective governance at the University of Sydney. (SunStar Philippines)
