Former DOJ chief appointed as Napolcom head

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed former Justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II as the vice chairman and executive officer of the National Police Commission (Napolcom).

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Aguirre will serve as commissioner representing the private sector.

Aguirre will succeed Rogelio Casurao, who recently passed away.

In a letter dated January 11, 2021, Aguirre accepted the appointment and committed to closely work with Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año who oversees the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“My appointment to the Napolcom carries with it the challenge to address the concerns and the stumbling blocks toward a better police force that will serve and protect our countrymen,” he said.

PNP Chief Debold Sinas welcomed Aguirre’s appointment.

“We are happy to work with the new vice chairman of Napolcom,” he said. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)
