FOR the second time in the recent five days, new coronavirus infections in the country exceeded 2,000, the Department of Health (DOH) case bulletin showed on Friday, January 15, 2021.

The case fatality rate also increased further to 1.99 percent on Friday from 1.97 percent in the previous two days, as DOH reported more than 100 deaths for the third time in just four days.

The DOH case bulletin showed 2,048 new infections, bringing the total case count in the country to 496,646.

The active cases increased to 27,033.

There were 137 additional mortalities, raising the death toll from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to 9,876. The case fatality rate increased to 1.99 percent.

There were 551 new recoveries, increasing the total to 459,737.

Among the new cases were 98 from Bulacan, 89 from Davao City, 84 from Pangasinan, 80 from Manila and 73 from Leyte.

In a virtual press forum earlier Friday, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said they were closely monitoring the situation in Davao City, where cases have been climbing.

Davao City has a total of 10,340 cases, including 1,086 recorded over the past 14 days.

Vergeire said the hospital bed occupancy rate in the city, reported at 57 percent on Friday, was also increasing and “nearing the moderate risk” level.

Vergeire said the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Units (RESU) has reported a problem in compliance to the minimum public health standards in the city.

Davao City is under general community quarantine until January 31. (HDT / SunStar Philippnes)
