THE low pressure area (LPA) located 150 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes may become a tropical depression in the next 24 to 48 hours and will be named Typhoon Neneng, according to the advisory issued by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) at 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 9.

The weather bureau said the LPA is not expected to strengthen as it exits the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

Another LPA spotted east of Mindanao has dissipated and will no longer affect any part of the country, weather specialist Ariel Roxas said.

Meanwhile, Pagasa is monitoring a typhoon outside PAR with an international name "Mangkhut."

According to the weather bureau's advisory at 3 p.m. Sunday, the eye of "Mangkhut" was located 3,075 kilometers east of southern Luzon.

This typhoon packs winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, with gustiness of up to 145 kilometers per hour.

It is moving west northwest at 35 kilometers per hour but it is still too far away to directly affect any part of the country until Thursday, September 13.

"Mangkhut" may enter the eastern border of PAR on Wednesday afternoon, September 12, and may cross Cagayan and Batanes on Saturday, September 15. (CLC/SunStar Philippines)
