‘Ofel’ makes 2nd landfall in Matnog, Sorsogon

TROPICAL Depression Ofel accelerated and made its second landfall in the vicinity of Matnog, Sorsogon at 6 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2020, according to state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

At 7 a.m., it was tracked at 30 kilometers southwest of Juban, Sorsogon or 30 kilometers northeast of Masbate City, Masbate with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

It is still moving west northwestward over the inland seas of Southern Luzon and may pass close or over Masbate, Romblon, and Mindoro provinces, but has accelerated to 25 kph.

"Ofel" made its first landfall in Can-avid, Eastern Samar at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. It is forecast to remain a tropical depression while crossing the southern Luzon area, but is predicted to intensify into a tropical storm after emerging over the West Philippine Sea.

Moderate to heavy and, at times intense rains, will prevail over Bicol, Calabarzon, Marinduque, Romblon, and Mindoro until Thursday morning, October 15.

Light to moderate and at times heavy rains will also be experienced over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, and Biliran due to this weather system and over most of Mindanao due to the southwest monsoon.

Pagasa warned of flooding, including flashfloods, and rain-induced landslides during heavy or prolonged rainfall in susceptible areas.

Strong to near gale-force winds will be experienced in areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1.

Moderate to rough seas will be experienced over the eastern seaboards of Luzon and Visayas in the next 24 hours, especially in areas where TCWS No. 1 is in effect. Those with small seacraft are advised not to venture out to sea in these areas.

As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, the following areas are under TCWS No. 1 (30 to 60 kph winds prevailing or expected in 36 hours:

  • Southern portion of Laguna (Luisiana, Majayjay, Liliw, Nagcarlan, Rizal, San Pablo City, Calauan, Alaminos, Los Baños, Bay, Magdalena)
  • Central and southern portions of Quezon (Guinayangan, Tagkawayan, Buenavista, San Narciso, San Andres, Mulanay, San Francisco, Catanauan, Lopez, Calauag, Quezon, Alabat, Perez, Atimonan, Tayabas City, Mauban, Sampaloc, Lucban, Gumaca, General Luna, Macalelon, Pitogo, Unisan, Plaridel, Padre Burgos, Agdangan, Pagbilao, Lucena City, Sariaya, Candelaria, Dolores, Tiaong, San Antonio)
  • Occidental Mindoro
  • Oriental Mindoro
  • Marinduque
  • Romblon
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Catanduanes
  • Albay
