M6.7 earthquake hits Abra

A STRONG earthquake shook some parts of northern Luzon Tuesday night, October 25, 2022, just an hour after a moderate tremor struck Surigao del Sur in Mindanao.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit Abra province at 10:59 p.m., with the epicenter located seven kilometers northwest of Tineg town.

The tremor had a depth of 28 kilometers.

The quake was felt at Intensity 5 in Sinait, Ilocos Sur; and Intensity 4 in Baguio City.

Instrumental intensities have also been reported in the following areas:

* Intensity 5 -- Gonzaga, Penablanca, Claveria, Cagayan; Pasuquin, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Vigan City, Ilocos Sur

* Intensity 4 -- Bangued, Abra

* Intensity 3 -- Baler, Aurora; Ilagan, Isabela

* Intensity 2 -- Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya; Urdaneta, Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Madella, Quirino

* Intensity 1 -- Dinalupihan, Bataan; Bulakan, Calumpit, Malolos City, Plaridel, Bulacan; Pasig City, Navotas City; Cabanatuan City and San Jose, Nueva Ecija; Guagua, Pampanga; Umingan, Sison, Bolinao, Infanta, and Bani, Pangasinan; Polillo, Mauban, and Infanta, Quezon; Tanay and Taytay, Rizal; Ramos, Tarlac; and Iba, Zambales.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected.

Before the tremor struck Abra, another quake, at magnitude 5.2, hit Surigao del Sur at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, October 25.

The tremor had a depth of 64 kilometers and with the epicenter located 37 kilometers northeast of Lingig town.

It was felt at Intensity 5 in Lingig, and Bislig City, Surigao del Sur;

Intensity 4 in Lianga, and Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; Intensities 3 in Monkayo, Nabunturan, New Bataan, Laak, Compostella Valley, and Montevista, Davao de Oro; Intensity 2 in Maco, Mawab, and Pantukan, Davao de Oro; and Intenisty 1 in Cagwait, Surigai del Sur; Bayugan, Agusan del Sur.

The quake was also felt in the following areas:

* Instrumental Intensity 3 -- Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Bislig City, Surigao del Sur

* Instrumental Intensity 2 -- Santo Niño, South Cotabato

* Instrumental Intensity 1 -- Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.

Aftershocks are also expected in areas near Surigao del Sur, said Phivolcs. (LMY)
