THE killer of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Jullebee Ranara was sentenced to 15 years in prison for murder and one year imprisonment for driving without a license.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DOF) announced this on Friday, September 15, 2023, citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait, where Ranara was based.

Lesser penalties were imposed on the accused, the 17-year-old son of Ranara's Kuwaiti employer, for being a minor, said the DOF, adding that the verdict was handed down on Thursday, September 14.

The accused has 30 days to appeal the judgment to the Court of First Instance.

Ranara’s family was already informed of the court decision and “is grateful for the assistance provided them by the government.”

“The Philippine Government acknowledges the efforts undertaken by the Kuwaiti authorities to effect a speedy resolution of the case, in the pursuit of justice for our slain kababayan,” said the DOF in a statement.

Ranara was found dead on January 22. Her body was burned and abandoned in a desert.

It was found out later through an autopsy conducted in Gulf State that she was raped and impregnated.

Ranara’s remains arrived in the country on January 27 and she was buried days after. (LMY)
