THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a total of 1,071 aftershocks following the magnitude 7 earthquake that hit the province of Abra.

Of the 1,071, Phivolcs said 270 were plotted while 26 were felt.

The aftershocks have a magnitude ranging from 1.5 to 5.

In a statement on Friday, July 29, 2022, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged local chief executives (LCEs) in northern Luzon to monitor their areas of jurisdiction for aftershocks and other related incidents that may pose threat to the safety of their residents.

“LGUs in the hard hit areas of Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region are on top of the situation and will continue to respond to the needs of our citizens,” DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. said.

Earlier, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum urged the public to avoid landslide-prone areas in anticipation of aftershocks expected in the coming weeks following the major earthquake.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said a total of P48.3 million worth of infrastructure including roads, bridges, schools and government and private facilities were damaged in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 3 (Central Luzon), Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and National Capital Region (NCR).

It said the number of affected houses rose to a total of 1,583, in which 1,535 were damaged and 48 were destroyed.

Six persons were killed due to the effects of the earthquake, particularly falling debris, while four more were still missing.

Over a hundred individuals were also injured following the tremor. (SunStar Philippines)
