THE Philippines on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, began the administration of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine booster shots to health care workers.

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque led the ceremonial vaccination of booster shots at the National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI) together with vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr.

Vaccination of booster shots were also simultaneously held in San Juan City and other areas in the National Capital Region.

Health workers may get booster shots six months after completing their vaccination with Pfizer, Moderna, Sinovac, AstraZeneca, and Gamaleya vaccines as their primary series, while three months after getting inoculated with the single-dose Janssen.

They can get vaccinated by Moderna, Pfizer, Astrazeneca or Sinovac as their booster dose.

Based on the DOH's interim guidelines for the administration of booster shots, healthcare workers, or the A1 priority group, may choose their preferred booster dose depending on its availability in the vaccination site.

The agency noted that those who received mRNA vaccines such as Pfizer and Moderna are not recommended to receive old vaccine platforms or inactivated jabs such as Sinovac.

The government is eyeing to administer booster shots to around 1.5 million healthcare workers in the country.

The DOH is urging vaccination sites to still prioritize primary Covid-19 vaccinations such as those receiving their initial or second doses.

DOH Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje said they will also allocate vaccine doses for booster shots for the regions.

Meanwhile, the government is eyeing to start the administration of booster shots to fully vaccinated senior citizens during the three-days national vaccination drive.
