PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the postponement of Edsa rehabilitation for a month.

In a press conference, Marcos said there is a need to study new technologies, which can be utilized to expedite the Edsa development, which is expected to cause monstrous traffic.

“Pause muna doon sa ating rehabilitation. Huwag muna nating gagawin dahil pag tinitingnan natin ‘yung cost-benefit and analysis, maganda sana kung maayos natin ngunit ang laking sakripisyo nun dalawang taon, masyadong mabigat, mahigpit ang traffic,” he said.

(Let’s put the rehabilitation on pause for now. Let’s not proceed with it yet because when we look at the cost-benefit analysis, it would be good if we could fix it, but the sacrifice over two years would be too much; the traffic would be too heavy and difficult.)

“Bigyan natin ang sarili natin ng isang buwan. Pag-aralan natin itong bagong teknolohiya na nakikita natin. Gumawa tayo ng magandang plano. Baka naman imbes na dalawang taon, magawa natin sa isang buwan. Tingnan natin kung anong available sa atin,” he added.

(Let’s give ourselves one month. Let’s study this new technology we’re seeing. Let’s come up with a solid plan. Who knows, maybe instead of two years, we can get it done in just one month. Let’s see what resources are available to us.)

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) earlier announced the implementation of various interventions to ease traffic jams in view of the upcoming major rehabilitation of Edsa.

The rehabilitation was supposed to start on June 13 and is expected to last for at least two years.

It includes the implementation of the 24-hour odd-even number coding scheme to lessen the number of vehicles passing through the 23.8-kilometer major thoroughfare. (TPM/SunStar Philippines)
