NATIONAL Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Jaime Santiago has resigned from post.
On Friday, August 15, 2025, Santiago submitted to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. his irrevocable resignation, immediately effective upon the appointment of his successor.
In his letter, Santiago said he cannot allow “seemingly orchestrated” efforts to taint his reputation, which he molded through the years.
He said in line with his efforts to purge the bureau of scalawags, he caused the removal of those who have committed serious infractions in the performance of their duties and commenced the conduct of investigation on the irregularities committed.
“With my experiences as a former police officer, prosecutor and judge, I steered the bureau with my best leg forward -- regaining the trust and confidence of the Filipino people, the media with the bureau,” he said.
“However, detractors and those who have sinister interest in my position incessantly make moves to blemish my reputation. Those covert moves started when I tendered my courtesy resignation in response to your call. To my mind, lies, if repeated overtime, will give a semblance of truth,” he added.
Two weeks ago, Santiago ordered the dismantling of the agency’s special task force (STF) unit over the alleged irregularities during a raid conducted in a resort in Malolos, Bulacan against suspected remnants of illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (Pogo).
The “elite unit” was created for the conduct of investigation and operation on “special cases,” which include remnants of Pogo and scam farms. (TPM/SunStar Philippines)
