MISS Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios was crowned Miss Universe 2023 in San Salvador, El Salvador on Sunday, November 19, 2023. She bested 83 other queens from around the globe.

Palacios succeeded Filipino-American R’Bonney Gabriel, the ninth Miss Universe from the United States.

In first runner-up was Miss Thailand Anntonia Porsild, followed by Miss Australia Moraya Wilson.

Palacios is the first from her country to ever take home the crown.

In the final round, the top three participants were each asked this question: "If given the opportunity to experience a year in the life of another woman, whom would you select and for what reasons?"

Palacios chose Mary Wollstonecraft, a British writer, philosopher and advocate of women's rights.

"I would choose Mary Wollstonecraft because she opened the gap to give an opportunity to many women. What I would do is to have that income gap would open up so women could work in any area that they choose to work in because there are no limitations for women. That was 1750. Now in 2023 we are making history," Palacios said in Spanish.

Meanwhile, Philippine bet Michelle Dee ended her Miss Universe 2023 journey in the Top 10. She was also one of the Gold winners for the pageant’s “Voice for Change” category, which she shares with Angola and Puerto Rico.

The next Miss Universe pageant will be held in Mexico in 2024. (SunStar Philippines)
