THE Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) on Thursday, July 23, 2025, backed the Department of Health (DOH) in reminding the public to stay safe amid the torrential rain and massive flooding in the country.
In a statement, PhilHealth President and Chief Executive Officer (P/CEO) Dr. Edwin Mercado said it is imperative for the public to take precaution to prevent common rainy season diseases, such as leptospirosis and dengue.
"To prevent leptospirosis infection, the public is strongly advised to avoid wading or playing in floodwaters," said PhilHealth.
"To avoid dengue, the public is advised to keep their surroundings clean and use mosquito nets or insect repellent to avoid dengue-carrying mosquitoes," it added.
But in the event that they get hit by such diseases, the state-run health insurer said it is prepared to provide medical coverage.
PhilHealth said it is ready to cover hospitalization due to dengue and leptospirosis.
“Kung tinamaan ng dengue o leptospirosis sa kabila ng pag-iingat, magpunta na po kayo agad sa malapit na PhilHealth-accredited health facility para kayo ay magamot," said Mercado.
(If you contract dengue or leptospirosis despite taking precautions, please proceed immediately to the nearest PhilHealth-accredited health facility for proper treatment.)
"Huwag na po kayong mag agam-agam dahil sagot ng PhilHealth ang malaking bahagi ng inyong gastos sa pagpapagamot,” he added.
(There's no need to worry—PhilHealth will cover a significant portion of your medical expenses.)
For moderate and severe dengue cases, PhilHealth's benefit packages stand at P19,500 and P47,000, respectively.
PhilHealth added its coverage for leptospirosis is pegged at P21,450. (Anton Banal/SunStar Philippines)
