INTERIOR and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said on Thursday, January 16, 2025, that Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Rommel Marbil is most likely to be given a term extension.

In a phone interview, Remulla said there are strong indications that Marbil’s term will be extended, although there is no official word yet from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

“That’s the biggest reason I think it’s the midterm elections dahil you cannot shake things up now, mag-uumpisa na ‘yung campaign period din,” Remulla said.

“Indications that he will stay to take command of the PNP until after the elections,” he added.

Marbil is set to retire on February 7 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56.

He is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Sambisig Class of 1991.

Marbil was appointed as PNP chief on April 1, 2024. (TPM/SunStar Philippines)
