THE Santacruzan is a religious activity and is not a beauty pageant.

This was the clear reminder of Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula as he reminded the Filipino faithful on the significance of the annual May tradition.

In a report by CBCP News, Advincula was quoted as reminding Filipinos of the religious significance of the Santacruzan.

“The Santacruzan is not merely a colorful tradition, and certainly not a beauty pageant, but an invitation and reminder for us to take pride in and live out our faith,” Advincula said.

He noted how the tradition centers on St. Helena and her son, Constantine, as they search for the True Cross.

“We must commemorate not only the search of St. Helena for the Holy Cross, but also the deeper meaning of the Cross in our lives as Christians,” said Advincula.

He said the event should allow Filipinos to realize how to face challenges of life while keeping their faith.

“May we learn to carry the crosses of our daily lives with hope and love. May we remain steadfast in faith and united as one Church,” Advincula said.

To note, the Santacruzan is a traditional procession held in many cities, towns, and small communities throughout the Philippines during the month of May.

The procession features female participants, who represent biblical figures, while wearing traditional Filipiniana gowns, and going around the town. (Anton Banal/SunStar Philippines)
