SUNSTAR Cebu has dominated the 2024 Community Press Awards.
During the awarding ceremony held at Richmonde Hotel in Eastwood, Quezon City, on Friday, June 27, 2025, the Philippine Press Institute named SunStar Cebu Best in Photojournalism, Best in Environmental Reporting, and Best Edited Community Newspaper, all in the daily category.
For being Best in Photojournalism, SunStar Cebu was recognized for approaching visual journalism with purpose and precision, using photographs not as supplements but as central elements of storytelling.
SunStar Cebu was also commended for featuring images that carry news value, emotional weight, and narrative clarity which guides readers through the story not only with words, but with a distinct visual voice, for choosing and placing photographs with care, reflecting coherence, relevance, and an understanding of how visuals can drive the news forward and for its consistent ethical practice asevery image is properly credited -- whether taken by staff, provided by partners, or sourced from institutions- demonstrating respect for creative ownership and journalistic integrity.
SunStar Cebu bagged the Best in Environmental Journalism for publishing a big number of environment stories in 2024 that dotted the newspaper's pages from the front page that give prominence to the issues discussed and the inside pages.
It was also named the Best Edited Community newspaper for putting on spotlight stories that tackles issues that have a direct impact on the community noting various national stories that were given a local angle.
SunStar Cebu was also commended for the visual presentation that made the newspaper more engaging, easier to understand and appreciate.
