Alvarez: 1st in the Philippines

THE Ateneo de Davao University – Center Against Illegal Drugs (Caid) was inaugurated last March 15, 2017 at Padre Zamora Street, Davao City. The blessing started with opening remarks from Roawie L. Quimba – Director of the Caid while Archbishop Valles officiated the blessing of the new office.

Caid has four programs for drug reformists including Healing and Recovery; Drug Hotline and Referral Helpline; Human Rights Training for Law Enforcers and Ateneo In-House Community Awareness Training; and Mindanao Drug Trade: Linking the local to global.

The program was launched to help drug reformists because not all of them are capable of after-care rehabilitation program. Drug reformists themselves and their family members also do not understand how drug addiction damages one’s life. The stigma to drug addiction makes it a hindrance for them to ask for help.

Caid provides Drug Hotline Staff who had undergone various training about drug addiction, relapse prevention, family education, therapies, therapeutic communication, addiction coaching, legalities on drug use and telephone etiquettes.

Caid staffs are trained to ensure a respectful, empathetic, and emotionally supportive helping environment. They had simulations and knowledge-based exams. They are all registered nurses that are fully equipped with knowledge, skills, and attitude to handle callers’ needs and concerns.

The Addu Drug Hotline has one substance abuse trained information provider and a referral specialist that is on-call 24/7. They are dedicated to answer questions on drug addiction like quitting and relapses, making it easy for the caller to open up about their drug issues. While the referral specialist (credible, professional and reliable) through a helpline assists the client or the family members locate the right addiction program near them or a health professional.

The Addu Drug Hotline is the first in the Philippines and it aims to deliver accurate and up-to-date drug addiction information, provide accurate referrals and operate in a transparent manner to callers. With this, it will indeed assist callers to answer difficult, awkward and sensitive issues to address in a face-to-face context.
