Cor Jesu College chessers shine

COR Jesu College (CJC) of Digos City ruled the recently-concluded Davao Association of Catholic Schools Collegiate Sports Festival Chess Tournament held at the Philippine Womens College (PWC) in Juna Subdivision, Davao City.

CJC earned a total of 19 points in the six-round Swiss System format event to annex the college women's chess team gold medal while Holy Cross Davao College (15.5) and Ateneo de Davao University (14.5) copped the silver and bronze, respectively.

Charmaine Joy Rostace led the scoring for the CJC women's team with 5.5 followed by teammates Star Jen Candia (5.0), Mary Jonah Lequin (4.5) and Darlyn Mae Rostace (4.0).

In the men's event, CJC also lived up to its billing after scoring a total 19 points to rule the college men's chess team over San Pedro College (16.0) and Holy Cross Davao College (15.5) who settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

CJC men's team was composed of Jun Mark Baldesimo (6.0), Joel Dupalco (5.0), John Raymond Vistal (5.0) and John Patrick Lepiten (3.0).

Rostace of CJC, meanwhile, topped the women's individual class with 5.5 points, besting Joerlz Gimony (5.0) and colleague Candia (5.0) who wounded up in the next two spots.

Baldesimo, for his part, tallied perfect six points to clinch the individual gold over five-pointers Gino Angelo Asuncion of SPC and Dupalco. (ABM)
