Proud to be AC girls

EVERY year, the Assumption Old Girls’ Day is celebrated. While Typhoon “Lando” was exploding his wrath with high waters and gusty winds, the Assumption Convent Girls couldn’t be stopped from coming together to bond and perform. As per tradition, it is the Silver Jubilarians who sponsor the event.

For the day, the Asuncionistas (the AC girls) bring out the plaid skirts and ties and white shirts they wore in grade school and high school years. Swiss cotton skirts are starched and pressed to perfection to ensure that the pleats are lined accordingly.

Wearing them brings back a flood of memories of the days when one was walking the corridors of Assumption Herran and San Lorenzo.

A Jubilarian makes an effort to be in the grounds where she once struggled with, preparing for exams and term papers and theses. The day is not exclusive to bonding with classmates and dorm mates but also with the nuns in purple.

But the most fun part about these Old Girls’ Day are the practices prior to the big performance called the velada. For months, the Jubilarians who have not seen each other for years literally come together to conceptualize and to rehearse.

The velada cements the bonding. Whether in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and even the 90s, as long as one is able, the stage is your domain. Over the years, the velada has transformed into a total extravaganza worthy to be aired on prime time. How absolutely intriguing to watch the diamond ladies perform.

Negros has many Assumption graduates. You will see some celebrating their Diamond Anniversary down to Silver, or even faces just happy to once again don their uniform.

All hail to our beloved Assumption! We are proud to be AC girls!
