TWO Abu Sayyaf bandits and a soldier were killed while seven others -- one soldier and six bandits -- were wounded in a firefight in the province of Basilan, a top military official said Wednesday.
Colonel Rolando Joselito Bautista, Army’s 104th Infantry Brigade commander, said that the firefight broke out around 11 a.m. Wednesday in the village of Baiwas, Sumisip, Basilan.
Bautista said the firefight broke out as the troops chanced upon around 60 Abu Sayyaf bandits while conducting combat operations in the village of Baiwas.
The identities of the slain Abu Sayyaf bandits as well as those of the soldier were not immediately available.
Bautista said that one soldier was airlifted to a military hospital for treatment.
Troops were deployed to track down the fleeing Abu Sayyaf bandits, who scampered to different directions, he said, adding that the clash site is an identified stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sumisip town. (Bong Garcia)
