2 sexagenarians commit suicide in Bogo City, Balamban

TWO sexagenarians separately committed suicide on Monday, July 31, in Bogo City and Balamban town, Cebu, the police reported.

At 11:30 a.m. Monday, the body of a 67-year-old farmer was found hanging from the ceiling of his house in Bogo City by his 61-year-old wife.

The farmer, who reportedly became moody because of personal problems, used a nylon rope.

At 12:30 p.m. on the same day, a 62-year-old man was also found hanging from a branch of an avocado tree by his neighbor in Balamban town.

The man's daughter told the police that her father was suffering from tuberculosis and the latter was depressed.

On Sunday night, July 30, a 54-year-old man committed suicide after his brother accused him of being a warlock in a village in Aloguinsan, Cebu.

Dr. Rene Obra, head of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center's Center for Behavioral Sciences (VSMMC-CBS), said in an earlier report that relatives of a family member, whom they sense to be feeling depressed, should seek medical help.

He said the family should treat the situation as serious.

Obra, a practicing psychiatrist, said severe depression could often lead to other problems such as suicidal tendencies.

He urged persons who are feeling depressed to call the VSMMC Tabang Paglaum hotline. He said trained personnel will listen and give advice to people who are contemplating to end their lives by suicide. Hopeline Cebu can also be reached at 0939-9365433 or 0939-9375433. (KAL/SunStar Cebu)
