CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Some 200 fruit-bearing trees were planted Sunday, June 25, at the crucifixion site in Barangay San Pedro Cutud as the City Government celebrated this year’s Philippine Arbor Day.
Through the efforts of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro), City Hall employees, barangay officials in San Pedro Cutud, and representatives from attached agencies joined hands in planting 100 mango and 100 jackfruit trees at the five-hectare lot.
Cenro head Engr. Anele David said this initiative seeks to give convenience to thousands of tourists who will witness the world-renowned crucifixion rites in the coming years.
“Sa mga darating na taon hindi na magiging problema ang sobrang init dito sa lugar dahil meron na silang masisilungan na mga puno,” David said.
A simultaneous tree-planting activity was also conducted in the other 34 barangays of the city.
Each barangay was also provided with fruit bearing seedlings by the City Agriculture and Veterinary Office.
Mayor Edwin Santiago said the local government, through its Cenro, targets to plant a minimum of 2,000 trees each year to better achieve environmental sustainability and food security.
“We want every Fernandino to consider planting as a regular practice. Trees and plants are very beneficial not only in terms of fighting the adverse effects of climate change but also in increasing food productivity in our city,” Santiago said. (PR)
