3 dead in Benguet as van falls in ravine

THREE died while five others were injured after a van headed for Baguio City fell into a 300 meter deep ravine at Barangay Cattubo, Atok in Benguet.

Atok Municipal Police Chief Inspector Cesar Malong said the accident transpired 1:50 p.m. of January 30 after the van bearing plate no. AEN-382 fell into a ravine after trying to overtake an elf truck.

Rey Carisa Batong, driver of the van and a resident of Guinzadan Norte, Bauko, Mt. Province died during the accident.

Mechanic Mateo Elector Loy-odan Ngade, 34, of Tadian, Mountain Province and 69 year old Lourdes Payagda Balog-ang were also declared dead by Dr. Faith Perez of the Atok District Hospital.

Two minors were also hurt including Glenda Panisigan Batawang, Marlyn Pacio Tamayo, Apolonia Pacalaso, and David Ingaan Caoli Jr.

After receiving initial treatment from the Atok District Hospital, both Pacalso and Caoile Jr. were referred to the Pines City Doctors Hospital in Baguio City.

Malong added the rescue and retrieval operation ended at about 5:45 p.m. of the same day.
