500 investors expected to attend ‘Technology Transfer Day’

AROUND 500 Mindanao-based investors are expected to grace the third and final leg of this year’s Technology Transfer Day, which opens Tuesday, December 13, at the SMX Convention Center, Lanang, Davao City, an official of Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Davao said.

The Mindanao-wide event will feature 73 technological solutions by 17 homegrown inventors, which investors can capitalize on.

DOST Assistant Regional Director Elsie Mae Solidum said in Kapehan Sa Dabaw on Monday, December 12, at the SM City-Annex all these technologies are focused on five priority areas: agricultural productivity, industry competitiveness, countryside development, environment and disaster risk reduction management, and quality healthcare.

“This nationwide event aims to enable Filipino inventions and innovations be promoted and marketed, and raise awareness in building an ecosystem for the transfer and adoption of Filipino technologies into the mainstream market,” she said.

Asked on how the Luzon and Visayas events went, Solidum said, a significant number of deals and transactions were closed, a good indicator that Philippine’s science and technology are now more relevant and responsive to the needs of the local industry.

A signing of memorandum of agreement and turn-over of Royalties and Fairness Opinion Report was also made in April during the Manila-leg.

DOST undersecretary for Research and Development, said in a statement, the technologies to be presented in the city are the products of the last three years of research and development. She added these technologies are all set for transfer either by deployment or commercial route.

The event is in collaboration with Technology Application and Promotion Institute, Science and Technology Information Institute, MindaDOST, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. and the Mindanao Business Council.

It is also pursuant to passed Republic Act 10055 or the Philippine Technology Transfer Act of 2009.

One of the technologies that will be presented is Axis Knee System, a Philippine Council for Health Research and Development-supported technology known as the first and only knee system designed in the Asean region which allows access to knee replacement as it is 40 to 50 percent cheaper than imported brands.

The system, which is made in the Philippines and co-funded by DOST, has an innovative instrumentation and surgical technique, wherein more surgeons can also perform knee surgery without the need to undergo one year fellowship programs.

“Before, the industry is heavily demand-driven, but with this Technology Transfer Day, we are reaching more on the investors so that they can be aware on what are the available technologies here that can be vital in their business operations,” Solidum said.
