6 village workers positive of drugs

ANOTHER six barangay employees were caught using illegal drugs during the surprise drug test in two barangays in Cebu City yesterday.

Cebu City Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (Cosap) administered the test yesterday in Barangays Pasil and Busay.

Out of 76 officials and employees who underwent the test in Pasil yesterday, five were positive. They were a tanod, drainage cleaner and maintenance staffer.

In Busay, 54 officials and employees submitted themselves to the test, and one barangay tanod came out positive.

There are now 173 employees found positive of using illegal drugs in the 50 barangays where the surprise drug tests were conducted by Cosap.

Cosap Chief Alice Utlang said 4,022 employees went through the tests.

Five barangays, which include Pulangbato, Taptap, Tabunan, Lusaran and Budlaan, got a drug-free status.

“There are some employees who were caught using illegal drugs that were already enrolled in our rehabilitation program,” Utlang said.

Pasil Barangay Captain Julius Guioguio said he will no longer give second chances to his workers who were found to have been using the illegal drugs since it will just affect their service towards the barangay.

“We will not give them another chance because its their choice. We want clean workers here in our barangay,” Guioguio told reporters.

He said he already have suspicion that some of his employees were using illegal drugs, and he requested Cosap to administer the test to confirm it.

It was already the second time when the barangay requested for a surprise test.

Asked on the status of illegal drug trade in his barangay, Guioguio said the successive raids by some law enforcement agencies contributed a lot to the decrease of the illegal business.

“Sa akong tan-aw niminos gyod tungod sa mga raid (The way I see it, the raids reduced them),” he said.

Guioguio said he will not stop supporting the fight against illegal drugs to minimize drug-related incidents in his barangay.
