60,000 tilapia, hito fingerlings distributed in Davao

THE Davao City Fishery Office (CFO) will distribute 30,000 tilapia and 30,000 hito fingerlings to Dabawenyo fishermen on Friday, October 28, at the regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Davao covered court, Magsaysay Avenue, Davao City.

BFAR-Davao regional director Fatma Idris, the initiative targets to help Dabawenyos in their livelihood to further support the aquaculture for continued urban development.

The fingerlings dispersal is expected to benefit 60 beneficiaries.

Idris also believes that the assistance will give opportunity to fishermen to generate their own food and more profits during harvest time as well as increase local fisheries production.

"Fingerlings are distributed to provide fishermen their own chance to grow their own fish at their backyard for food and income if they sell them after four months," Idris told SunStar Davao.

Prior to the distribution, an orientation will take place to properly educate the recipient on how to effectively operate and inform them about the methods of starting a fishery business and how to sustain it.

Idris said that the growth in fisheries production for 2015 in the region resulted to a 22 percent fish sufficiency.

Thus, the production meets the fish requirement of the region given the number of the population.
