THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced it deactivated 62,000 registered voters in Zamboanga City's two districts for failure to vote in two consecutive elections.
Majority or 40,000 of the 62,000 deactivated registered voters were from the city’s second district while the remaining 22,000 were from the first district.
First district election officer Stephen Roy Cañete said the deactivation is pursuant to Section 27 of Republic Act 8189, otherwise known as the Voter’s Registration Act of 1996, and Comelec Resolution 9863 promulgated on April 1, 2014.
Cañete said the deactivated voters cannot cast their votes come May 2016 presidential and local elections unless they will reactivate their records with the Comelec.
He said among the reasons why voters failed to vote is due to discouragement of long lines on election day and their place of work is located on another place. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
