8 injured as tornado hits 19 houses in Negros Occidental

EIGHT persons were injured after a tornado ripped through 19 houses in Valladolid town and Bago City, Negros Occidental on Thursday night, June 15.

Valladolid Municipal Police Station Chief Junji Liba said that around 7:50 p.m., the tornado hit three houses in Barangay Guintorilan, five in Batuan, and a poultry farm in Ayungon owned by village chief Enrico de la Gracia.

Ruth Sibugan was hit by an object on her left eye while her 15-year-old niece was hit by a concrete material from another house.

Liba said the tornado lasted for only a few seconds, but it was apparently so strong that it wrecked the houses made of light materials and toppled some trees.

Liba cannot yet determine the estimated cost of damages as they were still conducting an inventory of the damaged and destroyed properties.

After hitting three villages in Valladolid, the tornado also ravaged Barangay Sagasa, Bago City.

Eight houses were destroyed and three others were damaged in the said village.

Bago City Police Station chief Joeffer Cabural said the tornado was “very strong” and felled several trees.

Cabural said two women, three men, and a six-year-old girl were injured.

He said affected were 19 households with 31 individuals, who stayed with their neighbors or relatives temporarily.

The tornado left an estimated P380,000 worth of damage to properties in Bago City, Cabural added.
