8 medals in wrestling

MATI CITY, Davao Oriental -- The Davao City Durians wrestlers accounted for two gold medals, four silvers and two bronzes in the Davao Regional Athletic Association Meet 2017 wrestling competition Thursday, March 23, at the Barangay Sainz covered court in this city.

Palarong Pambansa 2014 bronze medalist Alfredo Plaza and Lawrence Amaya clinched one gold each.

Plaza dominated the secondary boys' 42-46 kilogram (kg) division while Amaya subued his rivals in the -42kg division.

The silvers were courtesy of Brylle Asis (secondary boys' 50-52kg), Honalyn Baunillo (secondary girls (40-44kg), Wendelyn Anover (secondary girls' 52-56kg) and Jessa Baterna (secondary girls -40kg) while the bronze medalits are Lindon Labang (secondary boys' 54-58kg) and Shena Cres Lamson (secondary girls' 48-52kg).

Training manager Renier John Cagurol said the wrestlers' performance failed from his expectation as the secondary girls did not live up to their billing.

“May mga lapses lang talaga kaya na-anticipate ng mga opponents nila yung next move nila (There were lapses so their opponents were able to anticipate their next move),” he added.

He, however, lauded the athletes with their sacrifices and hardwork and hopes that the Palaro qualifiers will make it.

John Paul Tan and Edy Christopher Abenoja coached the secondary boys team with chaperon Zenneth Yocor.
